The design inspiration of the Auspicious Beast Metal ruler comes from the dragon carving of the Forbidden City’s sky lantern (restored) and the painted dragon and passionflower patterns of the Forbidden City’s architecture. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, sky lanterns were erected in the Forbidden City to honor the gods and pray for blessings, while they were often regarded as “wishing lanterns” among the folk. The lantern pole stands tall and straight into the clouds, with a golden dragon soaring at the top, symbolizing the auspicious meaning of “reaching the top of the pole, expecting one’s son to become successful”.
